A Brief History of Martial Arts

Martial Arts have existed in numerous cultures across the world since the beginning of civilization.

The Ancient Greeks, Romans, Aztecs and Egyptians often practiced wrestling, boxing and weapons play for entertainment.

The greatest martial artists were glorified. Over thousands of years techniques and fighting knowledge was mastered and built upon with each passing generation. But none were as sophisticated as the Eastern Asian martial arts.

Around the areas of modern China, Korea and Japan, techniques were developed to such an extreme level that they were simply superior to the techniques practiced in Europe and other regions at the time.

Martial Art of Taekwondo

Taekwondo itself is actually a fairly new martial art created in the 50′s in post-war Korea.

At a time of great division in Korea, the numerous martial arts schools were forced by the government to unite the best of their fighting styles under one martial arts banner. So Taekwondo was created.

Although the name of the martial art ‘Taekwondo’ is fairly new, the styles that it is based upon are thousands of years old and date back to a time prior to recorded history.

Two of the most important foundations of Taekwondo are taekkyon and subak. They are still practiced by some traditionalists in Korea and around the world but it is mainly used for ceremonial purposes and is nowhere near as practical and popular as taekwondo.

Taekwondo is widely recognised around the world as being the most effective martial art for sporting and practical purposes. It is the most evolved martial arts concept and incorporates the best of all the traditional Korean fighting styles.

Where Can I Learn Taekwondo?

At Evolution Taekwondo Ringwood, we practice the traditional martial art of Taekwondo inherited directly from post war Korea. This is where the worlds greatest and most widely practiced martial art was created.

Martial Arts In Blackburn

Black Taekwondo club previously had a martial arts dojang in Blackburn about five minutes from Blackburn train station.

During this time, our martial arts center was very popular and we had 100′s of active members. It was also located just down the road from a karate club and a boxing club, but Blackburn residents seem to prefer Taekwondo!

Under Grand Master Rod Black, we taught martial arts to hundreds of Blackburn residents. Some of them went on to represent their countries in martial arts tournaments. All of them gained life-long self defence and martial arts skills that would help them lead better lives.

Martial Arts Blackburn Moved

Our training center then relocated to a much larger space just down the road in Ringwood.

This was good because it allowed us to provide a better environment for teaching martial arts to our students. They suddenly had more space and more equipment and the same great Taekwondo instructors as before.

Since then, Ringwood has become the new home of Black Taekwondo, but we still have many of our Blackburn members training with us and we hope to welcome more in future.

Taekwondo For Special Needs Children

At Evolution Taekwondo Ringwood (formerly known as Black Taekwondo) we consider ourselves to be a very community orientated martial arts club.

As a community orientated martial arts clubs we like to extend the opportunities available through Taekwondo to the wider community and we like to think that we are providing valuable confidence and life lessons to children and adults who are in need.

If you have a special needs child who is struggling with their confidence because they don’t fit in well at school or they have learning difficulties, Taekwondo can provide a much needed outlet and also a structured program for active learning.

In Taekwondo we teach through action and we have found that many students who do not do well academically can do extremely well at martial arts and other action based activities because our programs suit their learning styles.

Taekwondo also features a great reward and recognition program. Our students are rewarded for hard work and regular attendance with a higher rank, each time they go up a belt.

Eager Ninjas Taekwondo Holiday Program

The Eager Ninjas Taekwondo Holiday program will be commencing on the 9th of January from 5.30pm to 6.15pm.

These sessions will take place with the usual Eager Ninjas instructors. i.e. Rebecca, Amanda and possibly Megan and the Black Taekwondo Centre in Ringwood will be providing a great time slot.

These sessions will allow parents to keep their children interested and working towards their goals while the holiday period is in effect.

We understand that many families will be away during this time, so these sessions will be marginally smaller but they will still be just as fun and productive.

This also allows parents to get their young ones out of the house away from the television screens and learning basic life skills which will help them lead happier more productive lives as adults.

We are very proud of our Junior Taekwondo program and the fantastic dedicated trainers who commit their time and effort into helping young kids achieve their Taekwondo goals.

Tell Your Friends

If your child has some friends that might be interested in Taekwondo, then feel free to share with other parents the benefits that our Junior Taekwondo Program has been providing your child.

As you all know the first session is free of charge but that is all it takes for most young children to find an instant love for Taekwondo and a productive outlet for their childlike energy.

Black Taekwondo Holiday Program

Our Taekwondo Club will be running weekly classes over the holiday period for any of our members who wish to train during this time.

These Taekwondo classes will be taken primarily by Kieran Black, with assistance from Brandon Waddel and possibly Michelle Meissig.

These Taekwondo classes will provide our members with some exercise and training over the holiday period. This helps to ensure that we start the 2013 Taekwondo season fighting fit and ready to work towards our martial arts goals.

We understand that some of our young athletes need constant training in order to stay in their best shape so we are happy to facilitate them.

Taekwondo Classes With Purpose

These Taekwondo sessions will be slightly more fitness intense to help maintain fitness levels. There will also be a strong on perfecting our Taekwondo syllabus material.

For some this will provide them with an opportunity to catch up with their peers, for others it will allow them to get further ahead. So when they begin normal Taekwondo classes on the 28th of January they will be confident in their skills and abilities.

Most Taekwondo clubs completely close over this period and don’t provide any training programs for their students, but we are not most clubs and we believe in doing all we can to assist in our members development.

For those of us who like our Christmas food a little too much, these classes will provide the opportunity to shed those unwanted Christmas kilos while doing an enjoyable sport.

Dear Black Taekwondo Members,

As the year comes close to a close and Christmas and the New Year is almost upon us, we have just a few important updates to make sure that everyone is aware of anything that may affect themselves or their children.

Term 4 Stage 2 Grading

Just a reminder to everyone that the Stage 2 grading is on this Saturday (22^nd) at 9.30am.

Eager Ninjas will be running as per usual at 11.30am but the General class and fighting training will not be on.

Good luck to everyone in their grading’s, we will look forward to seeing you all pass and earn your next belt.

The Holiday Break

Taekwondo classes will soon be subsiding for the holiday period and resuming again as per usual on Monday the 28^th of January.

There will be a holiday program during that time which you can book yourself or your child into. These classes must be booked and paid for in advance and will most operate every Wednesday night except for the 26^th of December (Boxing Day) from 6.30 – 7.30pm weekly.

Eager Ninjas will also be on every Wednesday night from 6.30-7.30pm (except for Boxing Day) and will need to be booked prior to the holiday break.

Term 1 2013 Timetable

We will be releasing the term 1 timetable for 2013 over the holidays, so please remember to check your inbox and the Black Taekwondo webpage for the new timetable!

There won’t be many changes to the current timetable but it is worth looking up none-the-less.

Ben is back!

We are happy to say that our Olympic hopeful Ben Lawson-Black is back in Australia and you will no doubt see him training in the centre until he goes back to Korea in early January.

For those of you who want to see Ben, this week might be your last chance so make sure you drop in and catch up with our star athlete!
